Before the development of freeways, U.S. highways lost their individual names and a numbering sequence was applied. Highway 80, following the previous Bankhead Highway, came out of Texas, across New Mexico to Tucson. It then turned north to Florence and on again to Florence Junction where it was joined by U.S.60 coming down from the north. From Florence Junction the road headed west to Phoenix, crossing numerous desert washes. This bridge carried the highway over one of the larger washes. Since being abandoned, the wash has changed its route and flushed away the roadbed on the east side of the bridge.
