Sgt. Haralson's grave is noted by two markers. The main one is a standard gray, granite headstone with the family name, "Haralson", on the reverse, and on the front is:
Orville W.
Haralson
Jan 3, 1919
Mar. 7, 1945
Killed at Iwo Jima
Sgt. Haralson also has a government-issued marker, with a cross at the top, and it reads:
Orville W. Haralson
Texas
Sgt 9 Marines 3 Marine Div
World War II
Jan 3, 1919 March 7, 1945
Sgt. Haralson was initially buried overseas, but in 1948, his remains were brought home. An obituary from the Wise County Messenger (available from me upon request should the link go invalid) notes a May 6 memorial service. He was born in Bonita, not far from here, but his family ultimately settled in Montague, south of Nocona. After he completed his education, he moved to Houston and worked in the lumber industry before volunteering for the Marines in 1942. He was deployed overseas in 1943, with L Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, and fought at Bougainville and Guam before being killed at Iwo Jima. No other details seem to be available, although a few accounts note that Sgt. Haralson was well-liked around town.
