This pillar is situated on the summit of Cockleroy, sometimes referred to as Cocklerue Hill or Cockleroi, which is a 278 metre height around two miles to the south of Linlithgow in West Lothian. The hill was the site of an Iron-Age fort and is on the western edge of Beecraigs Country Park.
The first pillar was constructed in 1944 (flush bracket no.S3235), and was rebuilt on the same base in 1958. The pillar shares the summit with an view indicator, built by the Automobile Association. The view is extensive over central Scotland, especially to the north over the Forth Valley.
STEEPNESS: A short, sharp climb. Steep, but not long up the east side.
TERRAIN: After leaving the woodland track, it is grass with a path worn out to the summit.
ACCESSIBILITY: From the Cockleroy car park to the east it is less than a third of a mile.
NAVIGATION: A sign maps out the route in the car park. A quick walk westwards through the forest is followed to a gate which leads to the ascent up through pastureland. A path has been carved out up the hillside.
DANGER: None, apart from any livestock that may be on the hillside.
