The Wilcannia centre lift bridge was opened in January 1890 and allowed paddle steamers and their loaded barges to pass on their way up or down the Darling River at he time when Wilcannia was Australia's third largest inland port.
In 1991 the bridge was bypassed by a new bridge just upstream, although it remains in use for pedestrians and cyclists,
