Henry Moore
Né en 1898 à Castleford, en Angleterre, Henry Moore est reconnu comme l’un des plus grands sculpteurs du XXe siècle. Après ses études au Royal College of Art de Londres, il s’installe en 1932 à Hampstead, dans le même quartier que Ben Nicholson et Barbara Hepworth. En 1940, après le bombardement de son atelier, il se fixe à Much Hadham, dans l’Hertfordshire, où il habitera jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Rejetant la tradition académique du modelage, Moore a réalisé la plupart de ses premières œuvres par taille directe. Pendant les années 1930, son art fut plus directement influencé par celui de l’avant-garde européenne, en particulier le surréalisme de Jean Arp. Bien qu’il ait produit des pièces purement abstraites, ses œuvres ont toujours été basées sur des formes naturelles – habituellement celles du corps humain. Moore dessinait constamment, et ses esquisses préparatoires lui permettaient d’étudier diverses poses et variations formelles. Il pouvait ensuite traduire en sculpture celles qui avaient retenu son attention. À compter du milieu des années 1950, toutefois, ses méthodes de travail ont changé. Ses sculptures sont devenues moins frontales, et il a constaté que travailler à partir d’un dessin était contraire à ses objectifs. Il n’a pas pour autant renoncé à dessiner, mais les dessins et lithographies en couleur qu’il a produits dans la dernière partie de sa carrière ont rarement trait à une sculpture particulière. Néanmoins, ayant cessé d’exécuter des œuvres monumentales à la fin de sa vie, il a continué à mettre sur papier ses idées de sculptures.

Henry Moore
Born in Castleford, England, in 1898, Henry Moore is recognized as one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. Having completed his training at London’s Royal College of Art, Moore moved to Hampstead in 1932, where he lived in the same area as fellow artists Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. In 1940, after the bombing of his studio, Moore moved to Much Hadham in Hertfordshire, where he lived for the rest of his life. Rejecting the academic tradition of modelling, most of Moore’s early work was carved. During the 1930s, his work became more directly influenced by European avant-garde art, particularly the Surrealism of Jean Arp. Although he produced some purely abstract pieces, his work was always based on forms in the natural world—usually the human figure. Moore also continually drew, his preparatory sketches enabling him to work out various poses and formal variations. The designs that held his attention could then be translated into sculpture. Beginning in the mid-1950s, however, Moore’s working methods changed. His sculptures became less frontal, and he began to find that working from a drawing of a sculptural idea was contrary to his aims. Although Moore continued to produce drawings and colour lithographs, those executed in the latter part of his career seldom relate directly to a specific sculpture. Nevertheless, at the end of his life, when he no longer executed large works, he continued to make drawings of ideas for sculptures. He died in Much Hadham, England, in 1986.
