Student Josh Tate is found stabbed at the bottom of a ravine. Josh is a chemistry student who shared a flat with Spencer. Spencer says that Josh was a quiet reserved student, but the police find that Josh frequented a lap dancing club called Exotica. Interestingly Spencer’s girlfriend, Melanie, works at exotica. Spencer claims to have spent the night with Melanie on the night of Josh’s death.

Josh worked part time at the labs run by his tutor Beverley Calcutt. His bank account showed large amounts of money going through his account. Banks suspects that Josh was manufacturing Ecstacy pills, particularly as Exotica is run by a an ex con called Liam Fallon. Banks decides to tail Fallon and finds Beverley Calcutt meets Fallon in a car park. A search of Calcutt’s shed uncovered a drug manufacturing lab.

Whilst tailing Fallon DI Morton notices a car following them. The owner is Martin Hexton, a former policeman. Confronted by Morton he claims to be working undercover, but later turns out to be a retired policeman. When police go to arrest Fallon they find him in his flat with a head injury. He is taken to hospital.

Whilst Banks thinks Hexton might be working for a rival drugs gang, Morton finds out that Hexton is Josh’s biological dad. Things come to a head when Hexton kidnaps Melanie. In Hexton’s car Melanie starts to blead from an abortion complication and Hexton takes her to A&E. When Hexton is arrested he admits he is around to find Josh’s killer, and that he kidnapped Melanie as she was carrying Josh’s child, his grandchild.

Melanie doesn’t bring charges and Hexton is let go. DS Cabbot finds that Melanie had her abortion on the same night Josh was murdered. The abortion was arranged by Spencer’s mother. Clearly Spencer’s alibi is broken. When confronted Spencer says he spent the evening with his father. Unfortunately, Hexton sees Spencer in custody and sets off to kidnap Spencer. He hijacks his family’s car and takes Spencer to the ravine where Josh was found. The police arrive at the ravine and have a showdown. Hexton gets a confession from Spencer after threatening to throw him off the cliff.

DS Cabbot gets to look at melanie’s phone whilst she is in hospital. She finds that Melanie’s baby was the result of Spencer’s dad raping her. Spencer and his parents are arrested for murder, conspiracy to murder and the father of rape.
