DCI Banks has a visit by his old neighbour, Juliet Doyle. She tells Banks that her daughter Erin has a birthday present on top of her wardrobe that is a gun. Banks wants to handle this discreetly but DCI Morton insists on a full blown armed raid on the house. The raid results in Juliet’s husband, Peter, being tasered in the chest and having a heart attack. There has to be a disciplinary investigation and DS Annie Cabbot is assigned to investigate the incident. The firearms team claim that it was dark in the house as the power was off for rewiring and that DI Morton should have known this and that Peter Doyle had a weak heart. DI Morton is suspended from duty.

When interviewed Erin tells the police that the birthday present was from Jaff Kitson, her boyfriend. The gun had recently been fired and the team need to find the victim. Kitson’s black Audi is registered to Richard Martin, a DJ. Trawling through CCTV the team find that the black Audi was forced off the road in a road rage incident. The othetr car is identified as that of a local villain Al Jenkins. Kitson is identified as the passenger in the car. Kitson had been a financial adviser to Jenkins, but Jenkins tells Banks that he sacked Kitson some time ago.

In a further complication Erin tells Banks that she has confronted Kitson about the gun and that Banks’s daughter, Tracy, is seeing Kitson. Tracy has been seen getting into Kitson’s vehicle in the city centre. Kitson drugs Tracy and takes her to Jenkins’s house. Kitson demands Jenkins signs over half his wealth in exchange for the girl. In return Jenkins could use the girl to get the gun back from Banks.

Meanwhile DS Cabbot has tackled two of the firearms officers and surmised, correctly, that the head of the team is having an affair with a junior officer and that the junior officer had forgotten to turn the lights on in the house during the raid. DI Morton is re-instated.

Banks confronts Jenkins, who tells him that he is terminally ill. The killer of Richard Martin was his son and that he wants the gun back to protect his son. Banks takes the gun out of the evidence store and gives it to Jenkins. Jenkins goes to the city centre where he meets Kitson and Tracy. In an armed police sting Kitson and Jenkins are shot and Tracy freed.
