This bronze plaque is under the statue of the World's Largest Pecan statue. There is a wooden sign declaring the painted concrete pecan underneath as the world's largest. The text, however, has nothing to do with the claim about the large pecan above - it is a historical marker describing why the pecan is important to the area. The text of the marker:
"Cabeza de Vaca traveled the 'River of Nuts' which was the Guadeloupe. He was the first European to record the existence of pecans. He noted they were good food and recognized alternate bearing. He was held captive for nine years on the 'River of Nuts' where he had ample opportunity to observe the growth and fruiting habits of pecans, This plaque erected on December 1, 1978 by the Texas Pecan Growers Association and the Guadeloupe County Pecan Growers Association commemorates this first recorded contribution to pecan literature. "
Group that erected the marker: Texas Pecan Growers Association and the Guadeloupe County Pecan Growers Association
