Corner Gas is a Canadian television sitcom created by Brent Butt. The series ran for six seasons from 2004 to 2009. Deriving its name from the roadside gas station in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, Corner Gas is the only gas station for 60 kilometres (37 mi) in any direction. The series completed its run following broadcast of its sixth season on April 13, 2009, with a total of 107 episodes. The show averaged a million viewers per episode. Corner Gas received six Gemini Awards, and was nominated almost 70 times for various awards. Corner Gas was filmed entirely in Saskatchewan. The interior shots (Ruby Cafe interior, Police Department, Oscar and Emma's house, etc.) were filmed at Canada/Saskatchewan Production Studios in Regina. All the outdoor scenes and all scenes that take place in the gas station were filmed on location in Rouleau, Saskatchewan. Rouleau is a small town on Highway 39 between Moose Jaw and Weyburn. The grain elevator was repainted to read "Dog River" instead of "Rouleau"

"The Howler was Dog River's local newspaper – nearly everyone wrote for it at one time or another, even Hank. It’s free, but if you subscribe you get a calculator. This building was used in filming as the newspaper’s office building, although we never really saw inside (but we did see Hank throw food at it!) The building is a private residence in real life."

Like the Dog River Police Station, the building that served as the exterior of the Dog River Howler is actually a private residence, located on Main Street across the street from the Dog River Hotel. A plaque affixed to the building denotes it's use as a part of the show. Not that the plaque is really needed given the fact that the large "Dog River Howler" sign still hangs above the first floor entrance.

The Howler building made sporadic and usually very brief appearances in the show, and only rarely were show characters present in the shots of the buildings exterior. The building is first shown in Season 1 Episode 1, where we see it being pelted with eggs and watermellow (as Wanda and Hank describe ways that Lacey might consider getting revenge for the a recent negative headline the paper published ("BIG CITY WOMAN DESTROYS LANDMARK"). One of the first episodes to feature the building and characters from the show is Season 1 Episode 6, where officers Davis and Karen are shown sitting in their police cruiser in front of the Howler. And in Season 1 Episode 9 we see Davis, Karen and Brent standing beside the police car which again is parked in front of the Howler; in that scene, Brent teases Davis with the new cell phone that he just purchased in a effort to fuel Davis' cell-phone envy.
