The Ray mine is an open pit strip mine. As the mine expanded it became necessary to relocate families from three small communities to access the copper ore. Kennecott Copper Company created the Town of Kearny in 1958 to accommodate displaced families. Next to the town, the Ray Memorial Cemetery houses the remains of those who had been buried near the other towns. The cemetery is laid out in a precise grid as the bodies were mostly identified in the process of relocation. The cemetery is considered full. Tombstones in the cemetery are almost all uniform cement markers as the old markers would have been wood or welded pipe crosses made in the mine shop. Records for those interred are thorough as the mining companies kept lists of those who died and the cause of death.
