This Smoky is guarding the French Creek State Park in southeastern Pennsylvania but, unfortunately, in 2012, this forest did suffer from a fire which started out over 10 acres and ended up destroying 741 acres. The fire was caused when trees fell onto the power wires on the property of Hopewell Village National Historic Site and per the newspaper article about this fire "it would become the longest active fire operation in Pennsylvania history and involved hundreds to finally put it out two weeks later." But, there was nothing Smoky could do to prevent this fire and he continues to stand outside the French Creek state park office reminding people that forest fires are often preventable.
