The Main Hotel - Wilburton, OK - Signs of History on Waymarking.com

The Main Hotel was located at 130 E. Main Street in downtown Wilburton. Then came May 5, 1960! Tornadoes broke out in numerous locations in Oklahoma. One devastating tornado hit the town of Wilburton. Over one hundred people were injured and thirteen were killed. The Main Hotel was destroyed.

Today, the site is the Goldberg & Joseph Heritage Park, a small park area dedicated to the founders and citizens of Wilburton over the years. To the east of the entrance, the original Main Hotel name on the entry step is all that is left of the hotel. A bronze plaque nearby tells of this historical event. It reads:

The Main Hotel was

many years. The final
owners, Mr. and Mrs.
Earl Belz, ran the hotel
and a popular cafe
inside until the building
was destroyed in the
May 5, 1960 tornado.
