A granite cresset stone with 4 holes positioned by the bower arch at the west end of St Marwenne's church, Marhamchurch. Possibly contemporary with the building of the church, 15th/16th century, although the pilar it now stands on is modern.
A form of oil lamp, the holes would be filled with tallow and a wick would burn from the 'candle'. Probably originally sited near the altar in medieval times.
