El Paso Times, El Paso, TX The Big Bend in particular and West Texas in general were interested in the dedication of the Big Bend Museum at Sul Ross State Teachers' College in Alpine yesterday.
President Pat M. Neff of Baylor University and Lieut.-Gov, Walter Woodul were among the principal speakers. Included among the other notables was J. Paul Henderson of El Paso, district director of the Works Progress Administration.
It was a notable occasion. Five thousand people, it was estimated, attended.
President Neff and Lieut.-Gov. Woodul gave to the occasion the formal recognition of education and the state. Mr. Henderson held a justified place by reason of the WPA participation in the building of the museum.
We hope the public gives sufficient credit to the part played by Dr. H. W. Morelock, president of Sul Ross College.
Big Bend Museum is his brain-child, and more. He virtually materialized it.
Using much WPA 'labor, and a little Centennial money, and mostly by clever finagling, Dr. Morelock accomplished more building for less money than one would have believed possible.
It will house the very fine museum exhibits which the college already had assembled, will have rooms and cases for the many exhibits which the college has not had room to display, and will make possible the acceptance of significant collections which could not be cared for heretofore.
But this is only part of the story. There also will be rooms for study and experimentation by visiting scientists, many of whom go to the Big Bend for research in geology, botany, etc. There will be accommodations for the summer art colony and classes in painting.
Both as to the building and the activities it will house, the Big Bend Museum is a noteworthy achievement. We are confident it will arouse the admiration of all who visit it.
