This milestone is situated on the A91 road in the Kingdom of Fife, a mile to the east of the market town of Cupar. It is a stone plinth with a cast-iron face bearing the placenames in black cursive lettering. The face was cast in 1824 by Alexander Russell at Kirkcaldy Foundry, this is stated on the top of the face in barely discernible lettering.
These type of milestones were especially made for the route between the ferry ports on the Firths of Tay and Forth, between the cities of Dundee and Edinburgh, Newport being the ferry port over the Tay, and Pettycur near Kinghorn the ferry port over the Forth. Both ports became obsolete after the bridging of both Tay and Forth with the railway bridges at the end of the 19th century, and the road bridges in the 1960s. The other places stated on the stone, are Cupar and the former coaching inn at New Inn.
The milestone lies on the southern side of the road on a narrow verge near to a blind bend on the road. A pavement runs along the opposite (north) side of the road from Cupar all the way to the village of Dairsie, two miles away to the east.
