The Honourable James Gladstone:

James Gladstone, or Akay-na-muka, meaning "Many guns," Canada's first native senator (b at Mountain Hill, North-West Territories 21 May 1887; d at Fernie, BC 4 Sept 1971). Gladstone, a member of the Blood tribe, devoted most of his life to the betterment of Canadian Aboriginal peoples. He was president of the Indian Association of Alta (IAA) and three times was a delegate to Ottawa to discuss proposed changes in the Indian Act. He played a prominent part in the fight for better education, greater respect for treaty rights, and participation of Aboriginals in their own administration. On 1 February 1958 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada and in his maiden speech he spoke in Blackfoot "to place in the official debates a few words in the language of my people, the Blackfoot Indians, as a recognition of the first Canadians." In the Senate, Gladstone spoke strongly on issues that affected Aboriginals; he sat on the 1959 joint committee to investigate Aboriginal affairs.

The bust of the late Honourable James Gladstone, senator from 1958 to 1971, was created by Rosemary Breault-Landry in 2000. It was commissioned to celebrate the first aboriginal person to serve in the senate. Senator Gladstone proudly wears a ceremonial feather headdress decorated with fir boughs in the form of a crown. A leather strap knotted under his chin is present to secure the headdress. He is wearing an undershirt and a leather vest on which a native motif has been created by a hammer and metal punch. Honoured to have been the first Aboriginal person to serve in the Senate, the senator conveys an aura of serenity and realizes that while he has played a role in advancing the cause of First Nation Peoples, much more remains to be done.

L'Honorable James Gladstone

James Gladstone, ou Akay-na-muka, signifiant « nombreux fusils », premier sénateur autochtone du Canada (Mountain Hill, T.N.-O., 21 mai 1887 -- Fernie, C.-B., 4 sept. 1971).
