CARLTON WEAVER1881 - 1947
The statesman, newspaper owner and editor
was born in Mt. Vernon, Texas August 25, 1881.
He arrived in Oklahoma in the late 1890's to
join his brother in the newspaper business in
Ada, Indian Territory. Weaver was elected a delegate
to the Constitutional Convention
of Oklahoma from Ada's District 87. He was
one of the youngest members being 25 years
of age. In 1930, as a resident of Wilburton,
he was elected to the Oklahoma House of
Representatives where he was elected Speaker
of the House in his first term.
After Statehood, Weaver settled in Wilburton,
purchasing land in this area, later donating
a tract to the State. Weaver promoted the
building of the Latimer County Game Preserve
in 1926, the building of State Highway No. 2 in
1927-31, and helped establish Robber's Cave
State Park in 1935. Interested in youth
organizations, Weaver helped establish the
first permanent Boy Scout Camp in 1926
in what later became the park.
Carlton Weaver died August 17, 1947. He is
buried here on this site among the pines he
loved, near the lake that bears his name
