Randle-Rather Building
1896-1897
427 St. George (Site 71)
Built at about the same time as the courthouse it faces, the Randle-Rather building is the largest and most elaborate commercial building in the district. Charles Taylor Rather and James Polk Randle, Gonzales cattlemen and merchants, hired San Antonio contractor Henry Kane to build the building to house their bank. Over the years the building housed several retail establishments and served as the meeting place for local social clubs. Built during the post-railroad economic boom, the 3 1/2 story brick Renaissance Revival building displays limestone detailing, a 3-part symmetrical facade, and a first floor arcaded loggia. Recently rehabilitated, the building retains much of its historic character, with the exception of the missing roof gallery rail.
