Am 2. Mai 1933, am Tag nach dem gerade von der NSDAP eingeführten "Tag der nationalen Arbeit", besetzten die SA und die Nationalsozialistische Betriebszellenorganisation (NSBO) deutschlandweit und auch in Bielefeld Gewerkschaftshäuser und begannen mit der sog. "Gleichschaltung" (eigentlich der Auflösung) der Gewerkschaften und der Beschlagnahme ihres Vermögens. Auf einer Propagandaveranstaltung des NSBO am Tag darauf wurde u.a. der teilnehmende Gewerkschaftssekretär Johann Rothen verhaftet und verlor anschließend auch seinen Arbeitsplatz. Politisch verfolgt und ohne Hoffnung auf einen Lebensunterhalt ging er am 18. Juni 1938 in den Tod.
Sein letzter freiwilliger Wohnsitz war Althoffstraße 18, Bielefeld.
Johann Rothen was a metal worker, member of the German Social Democrat Party and trade union secretary of the German Metal Worker's Union. On May 3, 1933, just one day after the NSDAP had introduced the new "day of national labour", the SA and the national socialists' factory groups (NSBO) took over trade unions' establishments, in effect closing the existing trade unions and confiscating their property (so-called "Gleichschaltung"). This happened all over Germany, and so it did in Bielefeld. Trade union secretary Johann Rothen was arrested the following day during a propagandistic meeting of the local NSBO, and he subsequently lost his job. As a victim of political persecution, and with no hope to ever earn his living again, he chose death on June 18, 1933.
His final place of residence was Althoffstraße 18, Bielefeld.
