Erie is unique with it's fishing port as there are two main options for fishing. On windy days the large bay can be used which is protected from high winds. Otherwise Lake Erie is easily accessed and is a prime spot for steelhead, walleye, perch, bass, and many others. Lake Erie is known as the "Walleye Capital of the World" in the spring through early summer.
Lake Erie owes its topographic features to being a fishing paradise: more than 140 different species spawn in the waters of its watershed. Sport fishing is popular and the commercial fishery remains the most productive on the Great Lakes.
It has the richest freshwater fisheries in the world. The commercial fishery there is more successful than any other Great Lakes combined with nearly 20,000 t annually, and accounts for 80% of the commercial harvest in Ontario (mostly yellow perch and yellow walleye).
