It is a Historic England Grade II Listed Building.
"Packhorse bridge. Probably C17. Coursed, squared rubble, ashlar voussoirs and springing. Single span, narrow bridge over the River Don with slightly pointed arch. Parapets and copings. Tarmac walkway. Two ribs support the arch." link
Pack horse bridges always have low parapets to cater for the panniers that were strung from the horses' backs.

These days the bridge is just a pedestrian bridge and carries the Trans Pennine Trail a long distance cycling, walking and horse-riding route between Southport and Hornsea that is 215 miles long.
