Posto de Transformação nº 436 (EDA)
[ A Casa de pernas para o ar | The upside down house ]
PT

“Was this the most strange house in Portugal? In land of contrasts and unusual beauties, we sometimes see monuments to the courage and dedication of the popular against the forces of nature. Located in Furnas, São Miguel you can find a house turned upside down! Well, it's not really a house. And it's not upside down, it was made this way. Quickly this place became a tourist attraction, being allusive to the constant mobility of the island because of the volcanism."
One of the most curious monuments that are in the island of S. Miguel, is this house in Furnas. It is an allusion to the constant mobility of the island derived from the constant movements originated by tectonic movements and / or volcanism.
It is a transformation station of EDA, Empresa de Electricidade dos Açores (Electricity Company of the Azores). Instead of something vulgar, the engineers and architects wanted to build something diferent, and they did. This strange house has become an authentic tourist attraction of Furnas and one of the symbols of the region.
Deep down, it's just the proof of how much you can do with little. It is enough for this that there is imagination. And in this house, imagination was what was not lacking.
