[ENG] The Pamir was an auxiliary sailplane (with additional auxiliary engine) and cargo ship. The four-masted barque was built in Hamburg by the shipyard Blohm & Voss and was launched on 29 July 1905. It belonged to the Flying P-Liners famous for their speed and reliability and was traditionally christened with a name beginning with "P", that of the Central Asian Pamir Mountains.
In the 1950s she was used as a cargo sailing training ship for German merchant shipping.
The Pamir sank in a hurricane on 21 September 1957. 80 of the 86 crew members lost their lives. The sinking and the subsequent rescue operation attracted great attention in the international media. The cause of the accident is still controversial today.
In the main entrance area in the tower (right side) of the Kathatinenkirche there is a large bronze table with the names of the crew members of the Pamir who remained at sea. Many of the crew members were young cadets. A sailing albatross hangs above the table.
