Three sisters, Lady Bertram, Mrs Norris and Mrs Price. Mrs Price married a naval officer, who was wounded and pensioned off. With nine children the Price’s are desparately poor. One of the children, Fanny is despatched to live with Lady Bertram and her children Tom, Edmund, Maria and Julia at Mansfield Park. She is treated as the poor relative, except for Edmund, who treats her kindly. Fanny feels emotionally attached to Edmund.

A few years later Aunt Norris, a parson’s wife, is widowed. The living, that was destined for Edmund, has to be sold to cover Tom’s gambling debts. Henry Crawford and his sister Mary come to stay with Mrs Grant at the parsonage. Mary takes an interest in Edmund, but is dismayed about his wish to be a clergyman. Henry, meanwhile, takes an interest in Maria.

Sir Thomas Bertram has a disagreement with Henry and Henry leaves Mansfield. Maria is distraught and marries Mr Rushworth. She takes Julia with her to Brighton. When Henry returns he turns his attentions to Fanny. Fanny rejects Henry, but Sir Thomas encourages Henry to persist. Fanny is despatched to Portsmouth to consider her position. Fanny does not take to Portsmouth and starts to soften to Henry, particularly as Edmund is drawing closer to Mary.

Scandal hits the Bertram family. Henry has an affair with Maria nd Mr Rushworth sues for divorce. The scandal hits the newspapers. Tom is ill from his dissolute lifestyle, and Julia has eloped with Mr Yates. Edmund becomes disillusioned by Mary’s attitude to Henry’s affair, and goes ahead with being an ordained minister. He eventually realises he loves Fanny and marries her.
