Palehouse Common is a small Hamlet just outside of Uckfield, it contains a few cottages and houses along one stretch of road, A recreational ground, Postbox, phone box and a notice board.
It is infamous for being the Hamlet bordering Hamilton palace, a large mansion being built by millionaire Nicholas Van Hoogstraten. It started construction in 1985 but in recent years appears to have been left abandoned, inside is believed to be a mausoleum for the millionaire when he dies. It is also said to have originally been planned to hold his extensive art collection.
The sign depicts a Shephard with a Sheep and a Dog. This represents the farming activity which occurs in this area.
There are also 2 flocks of Martlets depicted in the top corners of the sign. These reflect the birds seen on the Flag and crest of Sussex, the county in which this is in.
