With 'Corinthian columns' to either side of the entrance, this quite an imposing building. The Blue Plaque, to the left-hand of the entrance reads:
The Institute
The concept of the Institute movement was to establish a place for the
educational advancement of adults by providing a room with books, periodicals
and newspapers. Built in 1870, the lower scale building on the left side replaced an
earlier timber Institute which contained 250 books and a harmonium. With the need to
expand, this bluestone building was opened in 1878 to serve as a hall for public
meetings, lectures, bazaars and concerts. The building was designed by architect
Towland Rees and built by George Weymouth using stone quarried near
Pt. Elliot, and Willunga slate for the original entrance steps. The buildings have
since been used as a library and as offices for the
Corporation of Victor Harbor from 1935
