The trail is part of the former railway from Koblenz to Mayen (Ost). The part from Koblenz to Ochtendung is currently an inactive railway and the second half has been converted to a trail. The trail separated in Polch exactly 10km after the start in Ochtendung into a trail to Mayen and one to Münstermailfeld. Each of the legs are approc 10km in length. The trail has a paved surface with a stripe of gravel. This design was choosen to have surface comfortable for any kind of runners and bikers.
The railway was build in the beginning of the 20th century, to be more precise in 1904. In 1983, the track has been closed.The section Polch to Münstermailfeld has been converted in 1989. The section Polch to Ochtendung and Mayen was finished in 1992. In 2019 the trail will be extended from Ochtendung to Bassenheim, adding additonal 6km to the track.
