Built 1869, the Hertford House has survived many a hurricane.

After the 1900 Storm, about 500 city blocks of Galveston were raised using 16.3 million cubic yards of sand spread from a few inches to eleven feet thick. (visit link) Historic photographs show evidence that this area was raised over ten feet. Had it not been for this project in early 1900, this high water mark would a lot closer to the roofline instead of at the top step.
