Built 1869, the Hertford House has survived many a hurricane.
After the 1900 Storm, about 500 city blocks of Galveston were raised using 16.3 million cubic yards of sand spread from a few inches to eleven feet thick. (
visit link) Historic photographs show evidence that this area was raised over ten feet. Had it not been for this project in early 1900, this high water mark would a lot closer to the roofline instead of at the top step.
