In 1924 it was donated to New York State. It is now a museum and a State Historic site. It tells of the early Dutch inhabitants.

Built in the early 18th century by Hendrick Van Rensselaer, grandson of the First Patroon. It was named after the Van Rensselaer's estate in the Netherlands. It was remodeled in the Federal style.
In 1758 troops from New England were mustered here. British surgeon Richard Shuckburgh, sitting on the well, may have composed the verses of Yankee Doodle, poking fun at ragtag provincial troops.
