There have been 'a few' shipwrecks in the Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay region since the 1800's, and this sign gives some details on the major ones. It reads:
SHIPWRECKS
"Many ships have come to grief in the early days of shipping in Encounter Bay.
"Severe storms in December 1837 saw the loss of the South Australian which was blown from its moorings while anchored in Rosetta Harbour and the Solway was also wrecked on the reef.
"The John Pirie was driven onto the reef but was successfully refloated.
"In December 1847 the schooner Alpha was driven on to rocks at Encounter Bay and wrecked while the cutter Jane and Emma was wrecked at the Bluff in May 1852.
"In January 1908 the motor launch Triton burned off Victor Harbor and in August 1948 the fishing ketch Miss Echo was lost at Victor Harbor."
