As we Waymark in towns throughout Oklahoma, we usually stop for dinner at the local Mexican restaurant. So it was that we arrived at Los Molcajetes. Busy with customers even at the late hour, we were extremely pleased with the service and the quality of their food. They had things on their menu that we had never seen before, which were great!
The restaurant is locally owned and operated and has been here since 2013. There are tables and booths, so they are able to move tables together to accommodate larger groups. We found the waitstaff extremely friendly and helpful. Of course, we had to ask "What is Molcajete?" And of course they explained.
The restaurant website also gives a long explanation of a molcajete: "A molcajete is a stone tool, the traditional Mexican version of the mortar and pestle, stretching back several thousand years. Traditionally carved out of a single block of vesicular basalt, molcajetes are typically round in shape and supported by three short legs. They are frequently decorated with the carved head of an animal on the outside edge of the bowl, giving the molcajete the appearance of a short, stout, three-legged animal. The pig is the most common animal head used for decoration of this type. Molcajetes are used to crush and grind spices, prepare salsas and guacamole."
We now have been known to drive the 45 minute trip just to have dinner at Los Molcajetes. And we've never been disappointed. It's a must-try when you are in the area.
