They go by many names: Field Liners, Dry Line Markers, & Chalker Equipment For Baseball & Softball Fields. Been in use for a long, long time...maybe even before the 1930's. But, it is the best option above laying a line and doing it by hand.

This athletic field complex on MO-C E. of Moscow Mills, has a memorial for Victor and Virginia Harrell on one of the entrance columns to the park.

This elderly couple was killed by a drunk teenage driver, near here, and I believe this old liner was placed here as part of the memorial.
I think the plant is a tomato plant, and cannot for the life of me figure out why that was used.
