"LINCOLN COUNTY • A teen driver who struck and killed an elderly couple on an all-terrain vehicle in May 2011 was sentenced Tuesday to 14 years in prison.

"Zacheriah Cain was 16 and driving a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire when the crash happened along Brevator Road, east of Moscow Mills. Cain of Warrenton, crested a hill and struck the back of the ATV.

"The ATV driver, Victor K. Harrell, 81, of Moscow Mills died at the scene. Harrell's wife, Virginia Harrell, 82, a passenger in the ATV, died a short time later at an area hospital.

"Cain was charged with two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter after an investigation by the Missouri Highway Patrol revealed that he had been traveling at a high rate of speed and was under the influence of alcohol.

"Cain, now 18, pleaded guilty to both charges before Circuit Judge Dan Dildine. Cain got the maximum, seven years on each count, and the sentences are to run consecutively.

"After the sentencing, Lincoln County Prosecutor Leah W. Askey said she hoped the end of the case would bring closure to the Harrell family.

'“Two innocent people lost their lives as a result of a 16-year-old's poor choice,” she said." ~ St Louis Post-Dispatch, by Susan Weich, September 18, 2012
