The construction (which some also know as Conrado Martín, signature of perfumery already disappeared) dates from 1909 , when the Colonial Company decided to establish its main headquarters in the center of Madrid.
The Colonial Company Building is the work of the architects Miguel Mathet (member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) and his son Pedro Mathet, who remodelled the previous residential building completely changing its external appearance and conditioning it inside to accommodate the Company's headquarters.
Its façade sports an unusual modernisto design in the city, with balconies of vertical design on the sides and horizontal in the center, sinuosities in its decorative elements and allegorical figures referring to commerce and industry, such as that of the god Mercury.
In the upper part we find three ceramics dedicated to their basic products (coffee, tea and cocoa) by the ceramist Daniel Zuloaga, also responsible for other outstanding decorations such as the Palacio de Velázquez and the Palacio de Cristal in the Parque del Retiro .
