After his iconic Byron Clough painting, Rikki Marr asked a group of artists to share their takes on other members of Notts royalty...
a series of murals on the side of the Carlton Textile Workshops, Stoney Street, Nottingham.

An information board below tells a little more about the murals:
Robin Hood
by Espira

“I drew Robin Hood as he is arguably the most iconic figure from Nottingham history. When I was watching footage of the 2011 riots I saw a kid wearing a Tesco bag on his head to disguise his identity, kind of like a hood. He was robbing a Plasma TV store. In his mind he was probably taking from the rich for tho poor. A modern take on Robin"

Withnail and Batman
by Jamie Gibson

“I produced two illustrations for this project; one of Batman, relating to his Gotham roots, and another of Withnail, a character inspired by actor Vivian MacKerrell who spent years living in Nottingham. As soon as I realised there was a local connection to both subjects there was no way on earth I couldn't paint them. I'm always working on portrait projects for which I also take commissions. I‘m also in the process of getting some of my graphic work screen printed with a view to produce my own t-shirts.“

Samantha Morton
by Toby Anderton

"I decided to draw Nottinghamshire actress Samantha Morton as Agatha the “pre-ocog' in the film Minority Report. The author of the short story it was based on, Philip K Dick, is one of my favourite writers. I also like Samantha's scruples. She stands up for human rights and fights against cuts to public services that helped her when she grew up in a childrens home."

Bruce Dickinson
by Ian Jones

“I drew Bruce Dickinson of iron Maiden, who is originally from Worksop. I've been a huge Iron Maiden fan and when I first laid eyes on Derek Riggs sublime cover artwork on my brother's cassette albums in the eighties. I was instantaneously mesmerised by the band's mascot Eddie. I would actually attribute much of my early desire to become an artist to Riggs' illustrations. If Bruce saw it I hope he'd like it as it's of him in his glory days way back in the early eighties."

Su Pollard
by Charlotte Thoma-Morley

“I chose to draw the legendary Su Pollard She is a kitsch, larger than life, cartoonish character, and that seemed the perfect marriage with my style of artwork. I drew her as Peggy from Hi De Hi as I always thought she had hidden depths underneath those overalls. Plus, the series was set in the late fifties/early sixties which is where my main artistic influences come from. I hope that if Su saw the illustration she would say “0000 eck!" but in reality I'd be very pleased if it just made her smile."

Bendigo
by Yayzus

"When i read up on Bendlgo him I found his story really fascinating. If he saw it then I'd hope he would like the cherubs with boxing gloves on. I certainly hope he wouldn't want him to hit me. l'm currently working on a self scripted comic anthology project called Kimoc, so if any comic artists out there are looking to get involved they'd be welcome to get in touch with me.‘

Byron Clough
by Rikki Marr

‘I chose to draw him after The Cross Keys asked for something iconic from Nouingham to hang on their wall. A friend suggested Byron Clough as a bad pun and cross of the two characters. I‘ve always liked the idea at spending a very long time on a simple throw away joke. I like the over pompesness of it all and the play between supposed low and high brow cultures. It’s a digital painting done on e cintiq tablet. I then painted a varnish onto a canvas print to give it the look of a dusty old oil palntlng.‘

Jake Bugg
by Kid30

“I drew Jake Bugg, with a Paul Smith influenced beckground. I like Jake's music, and it‘s great to see something doing so well out of the Nottingham music scene. It's been a long time since that happened. Although I‘m not sure what he'd say it he actually saw
my illustration."
