This pillar is situated two miles north-east of the town of Auchtermuchty on the 196 metre summit area of a hill unnamed on maps, but referred as the nearby Weddersbie Hill to the south-west, or Grange Hill to the north-west. The hill is one of the eastern outliers of the Ochil Hills as the range runs into the northern part of Fife. The pillar lies amidst an area of wooded scrubland on the summit, although this is not as extensively forested as the rest of the hill, the southern part of which however is in the process of being cleared. The hill lies on Forestry Commission land and is surrounded by walking trails. The pillar has signs of wear on its corners and views are restricted by the surrounding foliage.

STEEPNESS: The last hundred yards or so leading through the trees from the track are reasonably steep.

TERRAIN: From the track, the terrain is through bracken and heath with the additional hazard of a fallen tree trunk.

ACCESSIBILITY: Parking is an issue but on foot the area is serviced by good forest tracks which can be reached from minor roads from Auchtermuchty to the south-west, or Lindores to the north.

NAVIGATION: A track circumnavigates the summit area through the forest and comes closest to it on the northern edge. From here it is around a hundred yards up through the trees to the top where the woodland thins out. The pillar can be difficult to locate amidst the trees and whin bushes, but a clearing to the north and east of the actual summit should reveal it.

DANGER: Mainly the terrain once off the forest track.
