This preserved milling machine sits on display at a small parkette which is dedicated to the memory of the many coalmines who lived, and died, working in the coal mines. There is a sign to provide information about the item, and it reads:

A breed of skilled tradesmen evolved along with new generations of equipment. Their role was to design, craft and modify parts to suit the unique conditions of local mines, and to manufacture parts as they became obsolete or difficult to obtain. Most of the pieces on display have been modified in one way or another using tooling devices like this milling machine. The machine shop was, and still is, an essential component of the mines. Then, as now, mine workers were encouraged to come up with better and more efficient systems for mining, moving and processing coal. The milling machine was versatile. In addition to straight milling of flat and irregularly shaped surfaces, it could perform gear and thread cutting, drilling, boring and slotting operations.

"We could make anything on this machine because the table could be moved up and down, and it could also swivel. It was state of the art in its day"
