The origin of the church:
Before 1862, the church was in the middle of the cemetery. In 1858, the municipal council decided to build a new church.
In 1860, work began. The first stone was laid on 26 March; two years later, the construction was completed.

The general appearance:
This church, which has the shape of a Latin cross, has 18 windows and 3 ogival doors. The vaults of the building are in the shape of an ogival cradle.
Interior decoration:
All the stained glass windows, made of coloured glass, date from 1860 and are the work of Mr Ladan, a glass painter from Reims. The eleven medallions in the right-hand stained glass window represent the life of Saint Martin and those on the left the life of Mary.
The polychrome decoration on the columns and ceiling is very harmonious. It was stencilled between 1885 and 1889 by Mr. Charles Blot.
On the sides of the transept, the church contains four large compositions by a child of Chevresis, Mr. Georges Grandin.
The paving is made of marble in the central part of the transept and, everywhere else, of beautiful Douzies-Maubeuge ceramic).

The Emperor's gift:
In 1865, Napoleon III donated to the church a magnificent painting, "Christ on the Cross", signed by Prud'hon (French painter born in 1758 and died in 1823), Meissonnier's former student.
