This preserved piece of mining equipment is located near the Municipal Building in Sparwood, BC. It was used in coal mine shaft. There is a information sign that provides information about the vehicle, as well as showing two photos of the machine prior to it's restoration. The sign reads:

... and, suddenly, it was quiet!
Battery powered utility vehicles began to replace compressed air locomotives or "dinkys" in the Elk Valley during the 1940's. THese new vehicles were powerful support units that moved men and materials throughout the underground mines.
"She was so quiet, ...with her batteries and rubber tires. But you know what? You had to almost lie down to drive her! Now, how easy is that?"
Compressed air, the source power for mine machinery for decades, was being phased out when this battery powered utility vehicle was introduced. With electrically powered equipment it was no longer necessary to operate the huge air compressors and high pressure air lines used for providing the source power for the older machinery.
The Kersey Utility Vehicle was able to move without restricting lines and cables . The batteries were connected in series to provide direct voltage, although they did have to be recharged after each shift. Moving the heavy battery boxes on and off the vehicle was a challenge in itself. As engine technology and ventilation in the mine shafts improved, diesel fueled machinery became more common, combining the power needed to move coal with convenience and economy.
This unit was used in the Balmer North mine unit until 1985
