In the 1930's the Bush Highway was completed from Mesa to the town of Payson in the central section of Arizona. This graded road replaced the Army wagon trail that had been the only connecting road. It was a graded, lane and a half wide, unpaved road but a drastic improvement over the wagon roads. This bridge was at the northern end of the Bush Highway where it connected with an existing road. It remained in use until a new paved highway was built in 1955. The new road included some sections of the older highway but left this section, and the bridge, abandoned.
