Le donjon d’Amay dit « tour romane » dresse sa silhouette quadrangulaire entre la rive gauche de la Meuse et l’agglomération proprement dite, en un lieu propice à la création de douves, encore indiquées sur la carte de Ferraris au XVIIIe siècle. Non datée avec précision, cette maison forte, construite en grès houiller et calcaire mosan pour certains détails, doit remonter au plus tard au tournant des XIIe et XIIIe siècle. Elle était accompagnée jusqu’en 1928 d’un « vieux château », manoir des XVIe-XVIIe siècles ayant pris le relais des fonctions résidentielles du donjon.
La tour se compose d’une succession de quatre étages sur une hauteur de 15,60 m sous corniche : cave, étage de jour voûté d’arêtes, le premier à être accessible de l’extérieur, étage de nuit et enfin, niveau supérieur remanié tardivement, tout comme la toiture. Les circulations s’opéraient à l’origine par un étroit escalier aménagé à l’intérieur des parois. Bien qu’austère, le bâtiment fournissait un certain confort : cheminée, évier, armoires murales ou latrine.
Il a bénéficié d’une restauration dans les années 1980 accompagnée d’interventions contemporaines de l’architecte Herbecq. Dotée d’une annexe fonctionnelle à demi enterrée, la tour a été reconvertie au profit du Syndicat d’initiative local.
De donjon van Amay, bekend als de "Romaanse toren", stijgt zijn vierhoekige silhouet tussen de linkeroever van de Maas en de stad zelf, op een plaats die gunstig is voor de aanleg van grachten, nog steeds aangegeven op de kaart van Ferraris in de 18e eeuw. Ongedateerd met nauwkeurigheid, moet dit versterkte huis, gebouwd in steenkoolzandsteen en Mosaanse kalksteen voor bepaalde details, teruggaan tot het begin van de 12e en 13e eeuw. Deze werd tot 1928 begeleid door een "oud kasteel", een 16de-17de eeuws herenhuis dat de residentiële functies van de donjon overnam.
De toren bestaat uit vier opeenvolgende verdiepingen over een hoogte van 15,60 m onder een kroonlijst: kelder, dagverdieping met gewelfde randen, de eerste die van buitenaf toegankelijk was, nachtvloer en tenslotte is de bovenste verdieping, net als het dak, laat opnieuw ontworpen. Oorspronkelijk werd het verkeer uitgevoerd via een smalle trap binnen de muren. Hoewel sober, bood het gebouw wat comfort: open haard, gootsteen, wandkasten of latrine.
Het werd in de jaren tachtig gerestaureerd met hedendaagse interventies van architect Herbecq. Uitgerust met een half begraven functioneel bijgebouw, werd de toren omgebouwd ten voordele van het plaatselijke VVV-kantoor.
Amay's keep, known as the "Romanesque tower", rises its quadrangular silhouette between the left bank of the Meuse and the town itself, in a place favourable to the creation of moats, still indicated on the Ferraris map in the 18th century. Undated with precision, this fortified house, built in coal sandstone and Mosan limestone for certain details, must date back to the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries at the latest. Until 1928, it was accompanied by an "old castle", a 16th-17th century manor house that took over the residential functions of the keep.
The tower consists of a succession of four floors over a height of 15.60 m under a cornice: cellar, daytime floor with vaulted edges, the first to be accessible from the outside, nighttime floor and finally, the upper level was redesigned late, just like the roof. Originally, the traffic was carried out by a narrow staircase inside the walls. Although austere, the building provided some comfort: fireplace, sink, wall cabinets or latrine.
It was restored in the 1980s with contemporary interventions by architect Herbecq. Equipped with a half-buried functional annex, the tower has been converted to the benefit of the local tourist office.
