Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar Palacios Ponte y Blanco (24 July 1783 – 17 December 1830), generally known as Simón Bolívar and also colloquially as El Libertador, was a Venezuelan military and political leader who liberated what are currently the republics of Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Panama as sovereign states, independent of Spanish rule.
In addition to Latin America's independence from Spain, one of his most important goals was the abolition of slavery, which he enforced among his troops right from the start. From 1820 he also passed a series of decrees to protect the land of the indigenous population.
