Cashion, Oklahoma currently claims a population of 825 souls. The community is named for Roy Cashion of nearby Hennessey, Oklahoma, who was one of Teddy Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" during the Spanish-American War. Roy, who rode his horse to Guthrie to enlist after graduating at the top of his class at Hennessy High School, participated in the Battle of San Juan Hill and was the first Oklahoman to die in a foreign war. Cashion became a "boom town" after the discovery of the Cashion Pool, a large oil field; at one time two trains a day ran into town. The town struggled during the Great Depression (at which time the railroads ceased service) but "The Town To Tough To Die" held on while many neighboring communities folded and vanished. Today Cashion is home to farmers, ranchers, and many who work in the nearby larger towns of Guthrie and Kingfisher.
