 "Îlet Sainte-Marie is actually a" peninsula "for part of the year, since it is connected to the island by a fine tongue of natural sand, or coastal cord, the tombolo. in Italian, means "Sand Arrow".
This sedimentary structure, quite atypical, is formed entirely of the sand, coming from the ocean, which accumulates, pushed by the trade winds, at the end of winter period (that is to say during the dry season, called Lent) when heavy rains cease, under the influence of the Bermuda High, taking precedence over the Azores High, which previously controlled the regional climate.
The dynamics of currents vary, orienting the waves in an oblique direction with respect to the beach, allowing the formation of the tombolo.
The sandy sedimentary deposits are deposited on a shallow bottom (which should not exceed 10 meters for the formation of a tombolo), conducive to the formation of this type of sedimentary profile, on the approximate line where the trains of waves coming from two sides of the islet meet, the waves each bringing sand left behind.
The tombolo of Îlet Sainte-Marie exists for 4 months of the year, most of the time from January-February to April-May. Because of its atypical character, it is an important tourist attraction.
Tourists can walk on the tombolo to reach the islet, where small trails are traced. When the conditions (period of the year, sea level, winds, etc.) are ideal, the tombolo can even be practicable on horseback, by bicycle, or even by all-terrain vehicle.
Note however that the site is inaccessible during nesting because of a nature reserve. "

 "L'Îlet Sainte-Marie est en fait un « presqu'îlet » pendant une partie de l'année, puisqu'il est relié à l'île par une fine langue de sable naturelle, ou cordon littoral, le tombolo. Tombolo, en italien, signifie « Flèche de sable ».
Cette structure sédimentaire, assez atypique, est formée entièrement du sable, venu de l'océan, qui s'accumule, poussé par les Alizés, en fin de période hivernale (c'est-à-dire pendant la saison sèche, appelée carême), quand les fortes pluies cessent, sous l'influence de l'Anticyclone des Bermudes, prenant le pas sur l'Anticyclone des Açores, qui contrôlait jusque-là le climat régional.
La dynamique des courants varie, orientant les vagues dans une direction oblique par rapport à la plage, permettant la formation du tombolo.
Les dépôts sédimentaires sableux se déposent sur un fond peu profond (qui ne doit pas dépasser 10 mètres pour la formation d'un tombolo), propice à la formation de ce type de profil sédimentaire, sur la ligne approximative où les trains de vagues venant des deux côtés de l'îlet se rencontrent, les vagues apportant chacune du sable laissé sur place.
Le tombolo de l'Îlet Sainte-Marie existe pendant 4 mois de l'année, la plupart du temps de janvier-février à avril-mai. En raison de son caractère atypique, il est un attrait touristique important.
Les touristes peuvent ainsi marcher sur le tombolo pour rejoindre l'îlet, où des petits sentiers sont tracés. Quand les conditions (période de l'année, niveau de la mer, vents, etc.) sont idéales, le tombolo peut même parfois être praticable à cheval, à vélo, voire en véhicule tout-terrain.
À noter toutefois que le site est inaccessible en période de nidification car abritant une réserve naturelle. "
