About the Pub
If you wander into the Stanley you could be forgiven for thinking you had stepped back in time. It is a small old traditional cosy Manx pub and none the worse for it. Settle in next to the beautiful open fire and enjoy a pint of Okells but be prepared to be interrogated - in the nicest possible way of course! Very popular busy Karaoke and disco every Friday & Saturday nights. Heron & Brearley cask ale pub of the year 2015.

The first documented licensee of this pub was Daniel Clarke who was in the licence trade in Parliament Street in 1837. In October 1841 Daniel bought the plot of land on which the pub now sits. The name the Stanley seems to have been used since 1857 and Daniel was the licensee until his death in 1864. The Clarke family continued to run the pub and then it passed to the Keremeen family Thomas and Edeard. The kermeen's were followed as licensee by William Surridge

In "Shining by the Sea" Constance Radcliffe wrote the following: "Daniel Clarke was the originator of the Stanley Hotel, and its licensee for over twenty years. A son of James Clarke of the Grange, Sulby, formerly of Aust and a turner and wheelwright by trade, who served several terms as Coroner of Garff, he was in the licence trade in Parliament Street in 1837. In October, 1841, he bought a plot, 'bounded on the West by the street from the Quay to Parliament Street, on the North by the Quay and on the East extending 45 feet along the next property.' This was part of the ground, right through to Parliament Street, which the masons William Radcliffe and William Cowleywere developing, and it is probable that they built Daniel Clarke's house which was in business as a hotel in 1843; the name "Stanley" is not found until 1857. Daniel Clarke ran it personally until his death in 1864, and ownership continued with his descenants. Later licensees included Thomas and Edward Kermeen, and William Surridge, afterward at the Bridge Inn."
