Elmore City is located at the intersection of Highways 74 and 29 in south central Oklahoma, in Garvin County. The town was first settled in 1890, with a post office being established in June 1890 named Elmore after a local merchant. After confusion with another town of Elmer, the town name was changed to Banner, and then later to Elmore City in 1911. The agricultural town had a population peak in 1960 of 982, and today has a population of approximately 735.
The 1984 film "Footloose" was loosely based on incidents that happened in the town of Elmore City, which had a ban on dancing since its inception. In 1980, local high school students came before the City Council asking for a lifting of that ban and being allowed to have their senior prom. Though it was a struggle for certain members of the community, they were allowed. The incident made news worldwide. In 2011, Elmore City began their Footloose Festival and there is definitely dancing in the streets now.
The town has a Mayor/City Council form of government. The town has a Facebook site at the link noted below, but no regular website. Elmore City has a police department, fire department and municipal court.
City Hall is a one-story brick building with a metal hipped roof. It is the location of an outdoor warning siren to alert citizens of weather risks.
