Originally founded by Clayton Earl, the furnace was opened about 1795 . In 1823, approximately 60,000 acres of the Atsion estates were passed to Samuel Richards, the son William Richards founder of the Batsto iron dynasty, where it remained in operation until about 1850. Although they are seldomly mentioned in most of the research documentation that I've referenced so far, Hampton Furnace and the Washington Forge, located further downstream, were included as part of the Atsion estates…

There are old building foundations scattered all around the area. Most are probably remnants of the cranberry industry that moved into the immediate area years after the forge closed…
