A romanesque sculpted column used as a respond in the sedilia of St Bartholomew's church, Bobbing.

Bobbing, St Bartholomew (Kent) - Figure of bishop - c.1200. Ref: (visit link)

"Sedilia - Triple with shafted arches, c.1300 by the mouldings. The w respond has been turned round to reveal an exquisite piece of Romanesque SCULPTURE. Octagonal shaft of oolite carved on three sides, the lower part with geometrical patterns, but at the top two 10 in. figures, St Martial on the r. (according to the inscription on his halo) with the deacon he is ordaining. The folds of their robes and even the wrinkles by their eyes incised with the utmost delicacy. Dr Zarnecki dates such a style c.1190 and connects it with Canterbury."

SOURCE - "Kent : north east and east" 3rd ed., by John Newman. p 147
ISBN-10: 0140710396

The piece was discovered around 1863 lying horizontal within the sedilia seats with its sculptured carving facing inwards, as if to hide it. No other pieces of similar stonework were found at the time, which was associated with the repair and restoration of the chancel.
