John Heinrich Detlef Rabe was a German merchant. He is also known as the "Oskar Schindler of China" for his humanitarian services to the Chinese civilian population in World War II, the "second Schindler" in US sources and the "German living Buddha" or "good German" of Nanjing in Chinese " designated.
Rabe campaigned during the massacre of Nanking (also Nanjing) in 1937/38 for the establishment of a two-by-two kilometer protection zone to protect the Chinese civilian population from the Japanese soldiers. He saved more than 200,000 Chinese lives.
Highly revered in China, forgotten in Germany, Rabe died in 1950 in Berlin.
