Waiting for Gordon is the 10th life size bronze sculptures displayed in Red Deer and is part of the "Ghosts” of Red Deer series. The Ghosts series is one of the largest life-size bronze sculpture collections in Canada that started in 1994 by the Downtown Business Association.

Waiting for Gordon is a tribute to Gordon and Julietta Sorensen who ran Red Deer’s first bus service and the Blue Derby Café which operated out of the bus depot and was established in 1957.

Waiting for Gordon is placed at the new bus transit terminal which was named to honor the couple.

There are two depictions in the form of roundels, one of Gordon and one of Julietta on a wall of the transit building.

Waiting for Gordon
Artist: Brian McArthur – 2012

Julietta Sorensen looks for her husband, Gordon, to arrive with the last bus of the day. In 1933, the Sorensens started a bus service in Red Deer and Red Deer County. ¬ They sold their town bus service to ¬the City of Red Deer in the 1960s, leading to the city’s current public transit system.

“Waiting for Gordon”
Artist Brian McArthur, Voyage Art and Tile - 2012 Julietta Sorensen is captured here, fresh cup of coffee in hand, standing outside her “Blue Derby Café”, waiting for the arrival of the last bus of the day driven by her husband, Gordon. The couple pioneered the first bus and cab service in the area in 1933. As well as the full size sculpture of Julietta and three suitcases (a bus passenger’s?), two ‘roundels’ depict each in their familiar tableaus – Gordon behind the wheel of a bus and Julietta serving customers inside her café.
